Google Analytics 4 Setup Guide

Step-by-step instructions to set up Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and start tracking your website traffic and conversions.

What is Google Analytics 4?

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the latest version of Google's web analytics platform. It replaces Universal Analytics and offers improved tracking, better cross-platform measurement, and privacy-focused data collection.

Why Upgrade to GA4?

  1. Future-Proof: Universal Analytics stopped collecting data in July 2023
  2. Better Insights: Event-based tracking provides more detailed user behavior data
  3. Cross-Platform: Track users across websites and mobile apps seamlessly
  4. Privacy-First: Built for a cookieless future with compliance features

How to Set Up Google Analytics 4

Step 1: Create a GA4 Property

  1. Go to analytics.google.com
  2. Click "Admin" in the bottom left
  3. Click "Create Property"
  4. Enter your property name and configure settings
  5. Click "Create" and accept the terms of service

Step 2: Add the Tracking Code

  • Add the Global Site Tag to your website's <head> section

Method B: Google Tag Manager (Recommended)

  • Add GA4 Configuration tag in GTM
  • Publish the container
  • Test using GA4 DebugView

Step 3: Configure Data Streams

  • Select "Web" as your platform
  • Enter your website URL
  • Enable Enhanced Measurement for automatic event tracking

Step 4: Set Up Conversions

  • Navigate to Admin > Events
  • Mark important events as conversions
  • Common conversions: form submissions, purchases, sign-ups

Use GA4's DebugView to confirm data is flowing correctly. Visit your website and check that sessions and events appear in real-time.
